چکیده

We report x-ray reflectivity ~XR! and small-angle off-specular diffuse-scattering ~DS! measurements from the surface of liquid indium close to its melting point of 156 °C. From the XR measurements we extract the surface structure factor convolved with fluctuations in the height of the liquid surface. We present a model to describe DS that takes into account the surface structure factor, thermally excited capillary waves, and the experimental resolution. The experimentally determined DS follows this model with no adjustable parameters, allowing the surface structure factor to be deconvolved from the thermally excited height fluctuations. The resulting local electron-density profile displays exponentially decaying surface-induced layering similar to that previously reported for Ga and Hg. We compare the details of the local electron-density profiles of liquid In, which is a nearly free-electron metal, and liquid Ga, which is considerably more covalent and shows directional bonding in the melt. The oscillatory density profiles have comparable amplitudes in both metals, but surface layering decays over a length scale of 3.560.6 Å for In and 5.560.4 Å for Ga. Upon controlled exposure to oxygen, no oxide monolayer is formed on the liquid In surface, unlike the passivating film formed on liquid gallium. @S0163-1829~99!11701-6#

X-ray reflectivity studies of liquid metal and alloy surfaces

Surface-induced atomic layering at the liquid/vapor interface in liquid metals has been observed using x-ray reflectivity on sputtered clean surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. A well-defined quasi-Bragg peak is obtained for surfaces of elemental Ga and a Ga-In alloy at large wave vectors qz;2.3–2.5 Å . These results are an unambiguous indication of atomic layering with an interlayer sp...

X-ray Scattering From Liquid Surfaces: Effects of Thermal Capillary Waves

As discussed in other articles in this issue of Synchrotron Radiation News, the availability of synchrotron radiation facilitated the development of X-ray reflectivity (XR) as an important technique for characterization of surface structure. Although the application of X-ray reflectivity to solids is relatively straightforward, as a consequence of the two-dimensional character of thermal fluctu...

X-ray study of the liquid potassium surface: structure and capillary wave excitations

We present x-ray reflectivity and diffuse scattering measurements from the liquid surface of pure potassium. They strongly suggest the existence of atomic layering at the free surface of a pure liquid metal with low surface tension. Prior to this study, layering was observed only for metals like Ga, In and Hg, the surface tensions of which are 5-7 fold higher than that of potassium, and hence c...

Microscopic surface structure of liquid alkali metals

We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the properties of an elemental liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface roughness of the K-Na al...

The structure of the surface of pure liquids

This paper reviews the progress in the study of the structure of the surface of pure liquids made in the last 10–20 years. This area of research has benefited enormously in recent years from developments in experimental techniques (especially x-ray scattering methods based on third-generation synchrotron sources, and advanced optical techniques) and theory (particularly computer simulation and ...
